How to Use Stikins ® Labels
Step By Step Instructions For Using Stick On Name Labels
Follow these simple step by step instructions to apply your stick on name labels. A copy of these instructions is printed on the reverse of the bags used to pack our name labels. Each pack comes in its own plastic bag, which is intended to keep your name labels during storage and to ensure you always have a copy of our instructions for use to hand.
Please note that if you are using your name labels as clothing labels for school uniform, clothing, or fabric items you MUST apply your name labels to the wash-care label and NOT directly onto the item itself.
This page also includes a few of our top tricks and tips to help you get the most out of your Stikins ® labels.
School Uniform Labels & Clothing Labels
- Ensure that the garment is completely dry.
- Carefully peel the label from the backing paper, trying to avoid touching the adhesive.
- Apply the label onto the wash-care instruction label of the garment (NOT directly onto the fabric or any other label).
- Using your thumb, smooth the label down for a few seconds to ensure that the adhesive fully bonds with the material.
- Do not wash the garment for at least 24 hours. This will allow the adhesive to continue to strengthen.
- After washing, do not be tempted to peel the label from the wet garment in order to check the adhesion.
Note: Stikins ® name labels MUST NOT come into direct contact with an iron. They are made of soft plastic and will melt.
Shoe Labels
- Carefully peel the label from the backing paper, trying to avoid touching the adhesive.
- Stick the label under the tongue of the shoe, or on the inside wall, not under the heel.
- Using your thumb, smooth the label down for a few seconds to ensure that the adhesive fully bonds with the material.
Stick On Name Labels For All Other Items
- Ensure that the item is completely dry.
- Carefully peel the label from the backing paper, trying to avoid touching the adhesive, and apply the label to the item.
- Using your thumb, smooth the label down for a few seconds to ensure that the adhesive fully bonds with the material.
- Do not place in a dishwasher for at least 24 hours. This will allow the adhesive to continue to strengthen.
Note: our name labels will be difficult to remove from paintwork or wallpaper. We do not recommend allowing children to use these name labels without adult supervision.
Tips & Tricks
Avoid sticking shoe labels onto the floor of the shoe. This puts your name labels directly beneath the foot where the friction generated during movement will cause the print to disintegrate rapidly.
Wash (and dry!) brand new clothes, school uniform, or fabric items before applying clothes name tags. These items may have traces of dust, excess dye, or chemicals used to preserve clothing during storage and distribution, which can interfere with the adhesive.
Labelled items can be washed alongside non-labelled items; Stikins ® name tags are designed to withstand a normal cycle of washing and drying. They have been tested using the BS EN ISO6330 wash test procedure for 60 washes and 40 degrees and work effectively provided you:
- Avoid washing at more than 40 degrees where possible.
- Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the cleaning products you use to make sure you are using the correct amount for the amount of clothing being washed and the hardness of water in your area.
- Avoid ironing directly over your Stikins ® labels; the synthetic material will be damaged by direct contact with an iron.
- Avoid soaking labelled items in extremely strong, highly concentrated cleaning products (such as bleaching products).
Stikins ® name labels should be applied onto the wash-care label of clothing and fabric items because this is the position used during independent testing. We cannot test all of the different material blends used to make clothing and fabric items, which means that (although they may work on some items) we cannot guarantee that your name labels will work if stuck directly onto fabrics.
When applying stick on name labels, smooth your labels down firmly to ensure that the adhesive bonds properly with your items.
If you are storing some of your name labels for future use, we recommend keeping them in their original packaging and storing them somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight - preferably with a consistent room temperature.
Some sun creams and lotions contain ingredients that can damage the print on name labels. We use a specialist printing ribbon, which is resistant to these ingredients to ensure that your print remains perfect all year round. Some sun creams and lotions (especially adult products and sprays), however, contain high quantities of alcohol-based ingredients, which act as solvents - and may cause some damage over time. Take care to allow sun creams and lotions to dry completely before putting on labelled clothing or handling labelled items.
